Accessibility
How well this site works with a screen reader, a keyboard, or large text, what we have checked, and what we are still fixing.
Everyone in the county should be able to find out what is happening, however they read the page.
What we aim for
We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the standard most city and county websites are held to. No outside group has audited this site, so we do not claim to fully meet it.
What we have checked
In October 2026 we ran an automated checker (axe) over 22 pages: the home page, calendar, directory, every board, the sign-up and submit forms, search, and a sample event and business page. We later checked tap size on every page of the town and kind-of-business lists, and on a sample of business and event pages. Each page was checked in light mode, dark mode, and phone size. It found a handful of problems, and we fixed them:
- Share buttons for Facebook and WhatsApp had text that was too faint against the button color. Both are darker now.
- The hidden spam-trap field on our forms had no label, so a screen reader could land on it. It is now hidden from screen readers too.
- In dark mode, what you typed into the home page search box was nearly invisible. It is readable now.
- The rotating box in the Today row on the home page could not be stopped. It now has a Pause button.
- Phone numbers and business links in the town and kind-of-business lists were smaller to tap than the 24 pixel minimum in newer guidelines (WCAG 2.2). They are taller now.
- Keyboard users had to Tab through the whole menu on every page. There is now a Skip to main content link, the first thing Tab reaches.
At the end of October we checked again, this time also by keyboard alone and by reading each page's structure the way a screen reader does. We covered about 36 pages in light, dark and phone size, plus the pop-up windows, menus and filters. We found more to fix, and fixed it:
- Small colored labels on search results (like Business Directory) were too faint in light mode. They are darker now.
- Tabbing into the home page search box showed no outline. It does now.
- On the calendar, opening an event left the keyboard behind the pop-up. The keyboard now moves into the pop-up, stays inside it until you close it, and goes back to where you were. Escape also closes the Towns and Types menus there.
- Closing the phone Menu with Escape dropped the keyboard somewhere random. It now goes back to the Menu button.
- The home page and calendar had no main area marked, so a screen reader could not jump straight to it. They do now.
- On Scroll Latest the page title jumped straight to post titles with no heading between. There is one now.
- The QR code on the subscribe page had no name, and the number of matches on search and the lists changed without a screen reader being told. Both are fixed.
A checker and a structure review only catch part of what a person would. We have gone through the main pages by keyboard, not every page. On November 1, 2026 we also listened to the home page, calendar, search, Jobs Bulletin and Add to Your Calendar page with VoiceOver, the screen reader built into the iPhone, and they worked well. We have not yet tried a screen reader on Windows (NVDA) or on Android (TalkBack), so we cannot say how the pages sound there.
What is built in
- Light, dark, or automatic appearance, set in the strip at the top of every page.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, the animated logo at the top holds still and the Today row stops rotating.
- You can pinch to zoom on a phone, and the pages reflow to fit.
- No app and no login are needed for anything you read on the site.
What we know falls short
- The logo at the top keeps looping unless your device is set to reduce motion. It has no pause button of its own.
- Event and listing text comes from many places, including locals posting and other websites, so we cannot promise every one is written clearly.
